If you were not at the first ever Upper Perk Baconfest you definitely missed the birthing of a new tradition in the Valley. It started when Scott Roth, Executive Director of Project Haven and founder of the Upper Perk Community Life Center, had a conversation with his friend David Bell about wanting to spend some time eating bacon. David said, “What if you did a Baconfest?” That was all it took and the Upper Perk Baconfest was born.
On Saturday November 23, 2013 19 competitors set up inside the Upper Perk Community Life Center to compete in the Bacon Off. A wide variety of samples were handed out to the crowd that flooded into the building. Within the first half hour over 100 people came in looking to vote on the Most Favorite and Most Creative dishes. The dishes were prepared in a variety of styles from candies to lasagna and everything in between.
Some local and national companies got behind the event. Bespoke Bacon was on hand cooking up fresh bacon and selling their delicious bacon. Hatfield Quality Meats supplied the concession stand and competitors with their bacon. Hormel Black Label Bacon handed out 100 lbs of bacon to the first 100 in the door recommended reading. Of course a Baconfest could not be complete without Inside Scoop’s original Maple Bacon ice cream. It was a fest for the tastebuds!
Approximately 300 people casted their votes for their Favorite and Most Creative dish. Robert Helverson Jr. had a strong win with his Buffalo Chicken Bacon Lasagna for Most Favorite. He walked away with the Favorite Pig, a Lodgeware Cast Iron Skillet, and 2 cases of Premium Black Label bacon. Kimber Stevenson won the Most Creative with her signature sandwich called “the Kimber” It is a grilled mozzarella cheese, peanut butter, grape jelly, potato chip, and bacon sandwich. She took home the Creative Pig Cup and a case of Premium Black Label bacon. Scott Roth wants to thank everyone that participated in making the Upper Perk Baconfest 2013 an outstanding success!
